Here is how this works in practice. A Director of Photography shapes the visual narrative of a production through creative decisions about lighting, camera movement, lens selection, and composition. Austria's rich cinematic heritage — from the dramatic Alpine landscapes to Vienna's imperial build style — gives extraordinary visual canvases, drawing on a tradition exemplified by legendary cinematographer Christian Berger AAC.

Here is the short of it. We connect you with skilled Directors of Photography who know both the creative and practical demands of your production. Whether you are shooting at Vienna's Studio Babelsberg-affiliated facilities or on location in the Tyrolean Alps, our team matches your project with DPs who bring the right visual sensibility and gear sourced through rental houses like Cine Plus and ARRI Rental Vienna.

Digital Engagement

On Location

Austria's cinematography tradition runs from Christian Berger's Oscar-nominated work on Michael Haneke's 'The White Ribbon' to Martin Gschlacht's collaborations with Jessica Hausner — a depth of camera talent trained largely at the Filmakademie Wien.

Here is how this works in practice. We place skilled Directors of Photography on shoots across Austria, drawing on a network that spans Vienna, Salzburg, Graz and the Tyrol. The Austrian camera community is small but exceptionally well trained — the Filmakademie at the mdw (University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna). The FH practical programmes feed a steady stream of operators, focus pullers and lighting cameramen into both arthouse and commercial work.

Here is the short of it. Our DPs work from the brief stage onward: they advise on lens packages and camera bodies sourced through Vienna rental houses, scout interiors at the Hofburg and Belvedere, and plan exterior coverage in the Salzkammergut or the Wachau valley. Whether your project is a feature, a broadcast series or a high-end commercial, we match the DP to the genre, the budget and the schedule, and we set up the full camera department around them so the director works with a cohesive team rather than a collection of person hires.

Here is how the picture comes together. Austria's appeal for cinematographers lies in contrast — imperial Vienna interiors and the raw alpine light of the Grossglockner massif within a few hours' drive. Productions filming here can combine the 30% ÖFI+ rebates with the FISA+ federal scheme and regional funds such as Filmfonds Wien and Cinestyria.

Here is the breakdown. This materially affects how a DP plans shooting days and crew size. Our cinematographers know the practical realities: the Föhn wind that can scrub a planned aerial morning, the short winter daylight that shaped the alpine sequences of 'James Bond Spectre' in Sölden, and the heritage-permit constraints inside UNESCO-listed centres in Vienna and Salzburg.

Here is what we have to work with. They work fluently with Austrian crews under the Kollektivvertrag collective agreements, hold the relationships with grip and lighting suppliers that keep a shoot moving, and bring the visual judgement that turns a location into a frame.

FAQ

Our DP Network

What experience levels of DPs do you provide?

Here is the breakdown. We give DPs across all experience levels: emerging cinematographers for indie and low-budget projects, mid-level DPs with solid commercial and documentary credits, and senior DPs with feature film and global broadcast experience. We match experience to your budget and project needs.

How do you match DPs to projects?

We review your creative brief, reference materials, and budget to shortlist DPs with relevant genre experience and aesthetic alignment. You receive curated showreels and can request direct conversations with candidates before booking.

What camera systems do your DPs work with?

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Our DPs are proficient across all major cinema camera systems including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, Blackmagic, and Canon cinema lines. Many specialize in specific systems but all are adaptable to production needs and rental availability.

Do DPs come with their own equipment?

Some owner-operator DPs bring personal camera packages, while others work with rented gear. We set up gear sourcing based on your preference and budget, whether through DP-owned gear, rental houses, or production-given gear.

Can you provide international DPs for shoots in Austria?

Yes. We can source global DPs for shoots in Austria, handling work permits and logistics. We also give Austrian DPs for global shoots needing local cinematography talent abroad.

What's included in DP day rates?

Standard DP day rates cover on-set cinematography services during production hours. Pre-production work (tech scouts, shot listing, meetings) is mostly billed separately. Gear, camera assistants, and late hours are extra based on project scope.

Productions in Austria that need this often pair it with Steadicam & Gimbal Operators, Drone Videography, and Underwater Camera Operators for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Virtual Production and Production Services.
